Out here the sun decides when your patio is usable. From May to October, an uncovered slab is a frying pan by ten in the morning, and the nicest part of your property sits empty all day. A good cover flips that: shade all afternoon, and with a string of lights, the best seat in the house after dark.
We build our covers with Alumawood, which is aluminum embossed to look like painted wood. That trade is the whole point: you get the look of a wood patio cover without the maintenance that comes with actual wood in this climate. It doesn't warp or crack in the heat, it doesn't rot, termites have no interest in it, and you're not out there repainting it every few summers.
There are two ways to go, and we build both. A solid roof gives you full shade and a real outdoor room, with ceiling fans and recessed lights built into the plan if you want them. Open lattice gives you filtered light and a more open feel. Plenty of homes take one section of each, which is exactly what the Chino Hills project in these photos did: solid over the seating and dining area, lattice where the homeowner wanted sky.
