Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration is an architectural shingle with one feature that matters more than any brochure line: SureNail, a reinforced fabric strip running through the nailing zone. Nails driven through that strip grip dramatically better, which is what keeps shingles on your roof when the Santa Anas come through the Cajon Pass.
The word 'system' is not marketing fluff, it's how the warranty works. We install Duration with Owens Corning's own components underneath: ProArmor synthetic underlayment across the deck, WeatherLock self-sealing membrane in the valleys and penetrations, starter strip at the perimeter, and DecoRidge caps with VentSure exhaust ventilation at the top. Install the full system as a certified contractor and the homeowner qualifies for coverage a shingles-only job never sees.
For homes fighting our heat, Duration COOL versions carry reflective granules that meet California Title 24 cool-roof requirements. That's attic heat and AC money, not just a color choice.
One more piece that matters: GAX Roofing is an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor. Owens Corning checked the license, the insurance, and the track record before putting us on that list, and they keep checking. Because of it, a registered full Duration system from us can carry the Preferred Protection system warranty: up to 50 years of non-prorated material coverage and 10 years of workmanship coverage backed by Owens Corning, not just by us. That sits on top of our own 10-year workmanship warranty. Same shingle from an uncertified crew, no Owens Corning workmanship coverage. We bring the registration paperwork to the estimate.
Same honest note as always: the shingle is the layer you see, and it's the least likely thing to fail. The system underneath is what you're really buying. Every layer of it is written into our contract, and you get drone photos of the finished work.

Coverage terms depend on installing the full system and registering the warranty, and the details matter. We walk you through the actual warranty document at the estimate instead of leaving you with a slogan. If a bid says 50 years but installs only the shingle, ask what's underneath.
Owens Corning only extends its Preferred Protection system warranty through Preferred and Platinum contractors. On a registered full Duration system (at least four Owens Corning components: underlayment, hip and ridge, and two more, which our standard install covers) that means up to 50 years of non-prorated material coverage and 10 years of workmanship coverage backed by Owens Corning. Flashings, fasteners, and wood are outside the manufacturer's warranty, which is what our own 10-year workmanship warranty is for.
If you want the extended coverage, yes, that's how Owens Corning structures it. But it's also just how a roof should be built: the underlayment, the ice and water shield, and the ventilation do jobs the shingle alone cannot. We don't sell the shingle without the system.
